Groceries, the prices are constantly going up! That first time I totaled up our family grocery expenses I was astounded at how much we spent! Now, I do have three teenagers, and two of them are boys, but I still keep my expenses in check after that first shocker. If you are looking to really trim your budget, this is typically the easiest area of a budget to trim. There are tons of ways to save even more money on groceries.

I plan our meals every week. It not only saves a lot of money, but takes a lot of guess work out of the age old question of “what’s for dinner, Mom?”. I go into detail about meal planning and how to save money here. There are free meal planning printables, so be sure to get them and start saving money meal planning!
I always check Swagbucks first for coupons because every time you redeem a coupon, not only do you save money on the item you are purchasing, but you get extra Swagbucks to add to your account. You can read all about how I use Swagbucks to help fund our Christmas account here. (I earned $43.58 in July alone, mostly by letting videos run on my computer!) Coupons.com is another great place to find coupons to print.
If you are not using Ibotta to save a little money every week, you are missing out! Sign up through this link and receive a $10 bonus. Make sure to redeem your first offer within 7 days to qualify for the $10 bonus. Simply find rebates from popular stores and then after purchase, you often have to scan the barcode and then the receipt. And just like that, a little extra cash back. Stores include not only grocery stores, but drug stores, convenience stores, clothing stores, online stores among others. There are bonuses to complete for a few extra dollars every month and you can also team up with your friends and save even more!
Walmart Savings Catcher
Scan your Walmart grocery receipts through the Savings Catcher app and it compares your purchases to all of the sale prices at competitor stores. If your item is on sale somewhere else, you win! You get the money back. I personally use the Bluebird Amex card that Savings Catcher links to and just keep adding the savings up until Christmas. You can also add the money to Walmart pay and use that when you pay for your next purchase at Walmart.
You can shop anywhere, the rebates are not store specific. As long as you have an itemized receipt, you can save money with Mobisave! I absolutely love this since I shop at Aldi’s most of the time. There are rebates for either brand name or generic items, there are many items to choose from and they change weekly. The best part, get this, once approved, your rebate gets credited to your Paypal account. No waiting to reach a certain pay out amount!
Another great money back app. Sign up here, then choose your offers (they change from often, so make sure to check weekly). SavingStar has an awesome new feature called One or Many. You can make purchases in one trip or many trips over the designated time period and save even more money on those items. You can register store loyalty cards and it will be very easy to save money on the offers you choose. You can also scan your receipts (just take a picture) and once you hit the $5 payout level, you can choose how you want to receive your cash back, either through Paypal or there are a number of gift cards to choose from.
New offers are added every week, so make sure to browse your offers weekly. The offer period starts on Thursday and ends on the next Wednesday. The offers are available at a variety of stores and for a variety of items. Saving more is as simple as buying what is on your list and then uploading your receipt. Once you reach $20 in savings, which will not take long at all, you can request your money.
If you shop online at all, you need to be using Ebates! If you have not signed up for Ebates yet, click here to sign up. There are many grocery stores and specialty food stores that are eligible for Ebates cash back.
Save even more money on Groceries
You can stack any and all of these offers to maximize your savings. That is a fantastic reason to download every one of these apps and start slashing your grocery budget!
A plan and a list is essential for groceries. Create your list, print coupons, check the apps for additional savings and go! Then make sure to scan your receipts with savings catcher and receipt hog.
You don’t necessarily need to be brand loyal. Keeping a price book may be a good idea in order to compare prices between stores and between name brand and generic items. Just a simple spiral notebook is good for this, small enough to keep in your purse or bag, but big enough to really be efficient.
Generic is usually so much cheaper and often is the same food repackaged. Aldi’s is one of my favorite grocery stores to shop at. I can get double the amount of groceries for the same price as other chain grocery stores.
Grocery shop with cash. Stay within your budget!
