Sounds funny, right? I save money with shredded chicken? Can she be for real?
Yes, I am for real. More to the point, I save money on my grocery bill by having shredded chicken in my refrigerator all the time. Yes, there is always a bag in there. Always.

How exactly does that even work?
Every week or 10 days, I buy a 5 pound package of boneless skinless chicken breasts. I then put it my crockpot right before I go to bed. My husband might spice it up with some herbs a little, but I usually do not. Then in the morning, Voila! The chicken is all cooked. I then shred it all in a big bowl and let it cool down a bit. You can also use a Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer to shred it very quickly, my mom does this and says it is amazingly fast! After it cools, I bag it up, half goes in the freezer and half goes in the refrigerator.
To tell you the truth, that half that goes into the freezer, it doesn’t stay there that long.
I also save all of the chicken broth. Why use store bought chicken broth when you can freeze this delicious broth? I use clean creamer containers and stand them upright in the freezer until they are full. Make sure to write on the outside with the date and what is in the container.
So what do I use all of that shredded chicken for? Oh, my the list is long…..
- A little shredded chicken on top of a salad makes a meal!
- Hot chicken wing dip (some people in my house can make a meal out of this!)
- Garlic parmesan chicken pasta (my personal favorite, recipe link below)
- Quesadillas, chicken wraps
- Slow Cooker Taco Soup
This list can go on and on and on….There is just so much you can do with shredded chicken. Be sure to check out my post 6 Budget Friendly Shredded Chicken Recipes for some ideas.
I consider shredded chicken as a staple in my kitchen, just as some consider their spices or flour and sugar. If there is someone in the house who does not like the dinner that I cooked on a particular evening, they can always make something quick and easy with shredded chicken.
